Woman injured in house fire

A Sturgis woman is hospitalized and in critical condition following a house fire.

Sturgis Department of Public Safety personnel said firefighters were called shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday to a residential fire in the 400 block of Center Avenue.

Authorities were advised a woman and child were trapped inside the structure.

Emergency personnel tried to enter the second story of the house, where the woman and child were thought to be. Heat and heavy smoke, however, forced them to retreat.

The child managed to get out of the house on their own, but authorities continued their attempts to reach the woman. Eventually, firefighters entered the house and found the woman unresponsive on the first floor.

The woman later regained consciousness while aboard a medical helicopter enroute to Bronson Methodist Hospital.

The house sustained significant smoke and fire damage, fire officials said.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
