Despite a two-month delay, Centreville Public Schools now has a full-time School Resource Officer in place.
Superintendent Chad Brady said the district has been working since earlier this year with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department to fulfill a goal of having a full-time SRO.
Starting today, Deputy Melody Rugg will fill the role.
Brady said Rugg’s responsibility is to provide another layer of safety and security for students and staff. Rugg’s work will also include enforcing truancy laws, monitoring the district’s Emergency Operations Plan and serve as a go-to for any legal matters.
Rugg is not responsible for enforcing student discipline or school rules.
The five-year contract averages about $100,000 a year and the position is a year-round job.
