Paper company sued for PFAS-contaminated water discharges

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a lawsuit against a paper company for alleged discharges of PFAS-contaminated wastewater in St. Joseph County.

According to WWMT, the lawsuit was filed in Ingham County Circuit Court against Ox Paperboard WP LLC and White Pigeon Mills LLC, which is collectively “Ox Paperboard.”

The lawsuit alleges Ox Paperboard’s unauthorized wastewater discharges resulted in the release of hazardous substances, including PFAS, into the White Pigeon River and surrounding area.

Since opening its White Pigeon mill in June 2020, Ox Paperboard has been issued seven violation notices by EGLE for improperly discharging PFAS-contaminated wastewater, officials said. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges Ox Paperboard failed to properly disclose wastewater lagoons on the mill property, WWMT reported.

Nessel’s lawsuit seeks proper closure of the wastewater lagoons, an end to Ox Paperboard’s unauthorized discharges into the waters of the state and civil fines according to officials.
