A group of third-grade students from Colon Elementary has assisted with an outdoor project spearheaded by the St. Joseph County Pheasants Forever chapter.
Principal Jill Braman said 34 students aided with hand-seeding a half-acre pollinator plot. The area covered is a part of the high school’s John VanWinkle Cross Country course. They were aided by five Pheasants Forever members, including Matt Lefler, Michigan Pheasants Forever education and outreach coordinator.
Braman said the concept is to conduct a multi-year project with each year’s third-grade class planting pollinator habitat in areas surrounding the cross-country route.
Eventually, after about a decade, the area should yield an abundance of wildflowers, native grasses and other forms of indigenous growth.
