A 29-year-old Vicksburg man faces a trio of charges after the vehicle he was driving struck and killed a 10-year-old boy earlier this week in Sherman Township. The victim was identified as Anthony Miller of Sturgis.
Logan Thomas was arraigned Tuesday before St. Joseph County District Court Judge Jeff Middleton. Thomas is charged with felony operating a motor vehicle while license denied or revoked causing death; operating an uninsured motor vehicle; and fourth-offense habitual offender.
The latter charge is the result of three previous felony convictions in Kalamazoo County, Middleton said.
Authorities responded around 8 a.m. Monday to an area near the intersection of Balk Road and Banker Street. Investigators said Thomas was driving west on Banker Street when he failed to see a group of children on bicycles. Despite lifesaving measures, the Miller youngster was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.
Investigators noted the group of kids, who are Amish, were on their way to school and in the same lane as the car that struck them.
Thomas entered a not-guilty plea. He is scheduled to return to court for a pre-examination conference Dec. 17, followed by a preliminary examination the following week.
