Sturgis man arrested for resisting arrest

A Sturgis man who had recently completed parole was arrested Christmas day for allegedly resisting and obstructing a trio of Sturgis police officers.

St. Joseph County District Court Judge Jeff Middleton conducted a jail arraignment Thursday for Joshua Fleming, 39. Middleton called Fleming “an angry young man” and initially declined bond for the convicted felon.

Prosecutor-elect Deb Davis reviewed the circumstances that led to Fleming’s arrest. She said it included attempts to flee from police in St. Joseph County and LaGrange County.

Authorities called off the pursuit due to the danger it posed to the public. However, a tip later that night led authorities to a room at the American Inn in Sturgis.

Davis said Fleming refused to surrender and took shelter in a bathroom after authorities forced their way into the room, where he was arrested.

Middleton set a pre-examination conference for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 7. He set a bond of $200,000 cash/surety.
