Vicksburg man violated terms of bond

A Vicksburg man accused of striking and killing with his vehicle a 10-year-old Amish boy in Sherman Township allegedly violated terms of his bond, court officials said last week.

Logan Thomas, 29, appeared Thursday in St. Joseph County District Court before Judge Jeff Middleton. His original court appearance stemmed from a Dec. 2 incident that resulted in the death of Anthony Miller. Thomas, however, allegedly tested positive for meth Dec. 16, three days after he posted $100,000 bond and was released from custody.

The positive test violated one of the conditions imposed on Thomas.

During last week’s show-cause hearing related to the bond violation, Thomas pleaded no contest to violating bond conditions. Prosecutor-elect Deb Davis said Thomas tested positive for meth during a court-imposed drug test at the Day Reporting Center in Three Rivers.

Thomas was given a 24-hour jail sentence as a result of his probation violation. His bond, however, was not revoked. Rather, Middleton revised bond conditions to include reporting for drug testing more than once per week.

Thomas, whose criminal history includes three prior felony convictions, is due back in court for a pre-exam conference Jan. 7. A preliminary examination hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14.
