Branch County – Deputy-involved shooting

The case of a deputy-involved shooting this week in Branch County has been turned over to Michigan State Police for its review.

Sheriff Fred Blankenship said the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Monday following a pursuit in Algansee Township. The situation started after the driver failed to stop for a deputy on Central Road near Ferguson Road.

The 18-mile pursuit ended at the intersection of Kelley and State Line roads, where the suspect’s vehicle left the roadway. Blankenship said the deputy attempted to take the driver into custody when the shooting occurred. Authorities said the suspect was shot in the arm.

The deputy reported speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour on snow-covered roads.

The suspect, a 33-year-old Camden man, was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center. A passenger in the vehicle was not harmed, Blankenship said.
