Lawton man suffers from hypothermia following crash

A Lawton man sought medical treatment after he was stranded in cold weather last week in Van Buren County’s Porter Township.

Daniel Abbott, 64, told authorities he was involved in a single-car crash around 8:30 p.m. Jan. 3 in the 74000 block of 22nd Street. Deputies said Abbott walked away from the scene of the crash in an effort to find relief from cold temperatures.

After an extensive search of more than 90 minutes, deputies found Abbott unresponsive and lying on the ground on the edge of a wooded area.

According to sheriff’s department officials, Abbott was suffering from hypothermia and appeared to be disoriented.

He was cared for by emergency-medical technicians.
