Loran “Mike” Kane, age 90, of Burr Oak, passed away Friday afternoon, January 3, 2025, at the home of his son, Michael, in Coldwater.
He was born March 18, 1934, in Sturgis, son of the late Harry and Stella (Sites) Kane.
Mike was a lifelong Burr Oak resident and graduate of Burr Oak High School with the class of 1953. While a student at Burr Oak High School Mike excelled in athletics playing baseball, basketball, and football. He took pride in being a member of the starting five in basketball his sophomore, junior, and senior years, and a member of the team earning four district championships. He was also a three-year starter, sophomore, junior, and senior years on the football team where he shined as a right defensive end.
On January 15, 1966, he married Betty M. Wood in Sturgis. She preceded him in death June 16, 1980.
Most of Mike’s working life was at Doer Products in Burr Oak before the closing of the company, when he joined Tube Fabricators in Burr Oak where he worked until retirement. Following his retirement, he accepted a job with Twin City Foods of Lake Odesa where he drove a green bean picker until the age of 86.
Mike was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 earning the rank of Specialist Third Class.
For several years he assisted with Burr Oak Bingo. He volunteered his time as a member of the football chain gang for four years and coached little league for eight years. He loved coon hunting and trapped for over 50 years, and he was a loyal fan of the Detroit Lions and Tigers.
He is survived by his children: James (Nancy) Palmer of Three Rivers, Cherrie (Steven) Shaw of Burr Oak, and Michael (David Switalski) Kane of Coldwater; 16 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; sister: Marilyn Rubley of Burr Oak and several nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sons: Jeffrey Palmer and Timothy Kane and brother: Morris Kane and LaMar Kane.
In honoring Mike’s wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Friday, January 10th at Burr Oak United Methodist Church in Burr Oak. A memorial service celebrating the life of Loran “Mike” Kane will immediately follow the visitation at 12:00. The Rev. Carl Litchfield will officiate. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Private interment of the remains will take place at Burr Oak Cemetery.
