The city of Sturgis is accepting permit applications for residents looking to keep urban chickens.
Applications are available in the Community Development Department at Sturgis City Hall, according to municipal officials.
Residents who have kept chickens prior to obtaining a permit and apply by Jan. 31 will be waived the fee for keeping of chickens prior to having a permit. Otherwise, the initial permit application fee is $75.
Only single-family properties are permitted to keep chickens.
Chickens must be within a fully enclosed coop covering no more than 60 square feet and stand 8 feet high. Each chicken must have 8 square feet of roaming space. Any chicken coop must be at least 40 feet from an adjacent residence and/or fenced enclosure with a top and/or cover.
