Seasonal weight & speed restrictions on county roads

St. Joseph County Road Commission has announced seasonal weight and speed restrictions on roads under the agency’s jurisdiction are in effect starting today.

The so-called “frost law” is in place to help maintain the integrity of county roads that are especially vulnerable during the springtime freeze-thaw cycle. The weight and speed laws are not imposed on all-weather or Class A roads during the period.

Precautions to be taken in order to comply with the temporary limits include reduction of truckloads by 35 percent, and a speed restriction not to exceed 35 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, agriculture commodities are required to secure a seasonal permit.

Restrictions are in place until further notice, typically when temperatures are consistently above 32 degrees.

Michigan State Police and St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department weighmasters will be monitoring traffic to ensure compliance.
