District employees last week got their first glimpse of a long-awaited addition to Centreville Elementary School.
Superintendent Chad Brady and nearly two dozen staff members were afforded the opportunity Friday to check out the still-under-construction lunch room and music room.
The 5,155-square-foot addition is at the north end of the building and a part of the $17.1 million bond proposal approved by district voters in May 2023. The cafeteria and music room addition account for $3.1 million of that amount.
The district currently uses its gymnasium as its cafeteria for the school’s 22 classes. Music, meanwhile, is taught on a closed-curtain stage in the gymnasium.
The new cafeteria – featuring a significant amount of light thanks to a bank of windows on the north wall – and music room are expected to be ready for students when they return from spring break April 7.
Brady said the new cafeteria and music room provide a viable solution to the nagging issue of limited space at the Young 5s through 6th-grade building. He said district voters should be proud of what their support has done to help Centreville Public Schools.
The cafeteria can hold a maximum of 190 students.
