County unemployment rose in January

January’s unemployment rate in St. Joseph County increased by more than 1percent from December.

Figures from the monthly labor-market analysis by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget show St. Joseph County’s unemployment rate jumped from 5 percent in December to 6.3 percent in January.

Meanwhile, Cass County experienced an increase in its unemployment figures from December to January. Its December rate was 5.3 percent and rose to 6.1 percent a month later.

In addition, Branch County experienced a small bump in its monthly rate. It was 4.7 percent in December and rose to 5.2 percent in January.

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January was 5.9 percent, up from 5 percent in December.
