Court sentences man charged with leaving child in car

An Athens man charged with leaving a child in a vehicle causing death has been sentenced to complete probation and possibly serve jail time.

Chad Morgan, 36, was sentenced Thursday to serve nine months in jail starting next February. Whether Martin ends up serving jail time, however, is contingent on a judge’s decision after Martin checks in with the court in December. The situation will focus on whether it’s appropriate for Martin to serve time.

In the meantime, Martin will serve three years of probation, starting Thursday, following his court appearance that morning.

Martin’s case stems from a mid-August incident, in which he inadvertently left his 3-year-old son inside a locked car for more than eight hours. Martin told authorities he forgot to drop off his son at daycare and proceeded to work an eight-hour shift at his job in Vicksburg.

  1. Forgot to drop his son off at day care? Seriously? And he gets a “tsk, tsk, don’t do it again” sentence? Only in our current “non-justice system”.
