A 33-year-old Gary, Ind., man was sentenced to prison last week for his role in a shooting death in Sturgis.
St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman on Friday sentenced Cameron Hope to up to 15 years in prison for the December 2022 shooting death of Jeremy Lampaert.
Hope pleaded guilty in August 2024 to manslaughter and felon in possession of a firearm in a plea bargain offered by former Prosecutor David Marvin after charging Hope with open murder.
The shooting took place behind Country Hearth Inn, at the southeast corner of Fawn River and Centerville roads, where a group of people congregated to use drugs, according to Stutesman.
Sturgis Police said neither Hope nor Lampaert were registered at the motel but had friends living there.
Hope fled after the shooting, but investigators eventually tracked him to Lake County, Ind.
