Michigan considers state-wide ban on cellphones in classrooms

As Michigan lawmakers debate a state-wide ban on cellphones in the classroom in order to keep students focused, Cassopolis Ross Beatty High School has implemented a no-cell-phone policy this academic year.

ABC News Channel 57 looked into the situation. It found that the no-cell-phone policy at the Cassopolis school was implemented at the beginning of the academic year. The policy bans smartphones, electronic devices and headphones. The only technology allowed inside classrooms are Chromebook laptops.

During a five-minute period between classes, students have the opportunity to check their phones. Phones must be off and put away, however, while in the classroom.

School officials noted they see higher levels of focus along with fewer disruptions and behavior issues. If House Bill 4141 passes, district officials said their students will be prepared when it becomes law.
