Richard Stephen “Steve” Campbell enjoyed every moment of his 80 years, and lived them to their absolute fullest. He passed unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
Steve was born on September 24, 1944, in Alexandria, Virginia, a son of John and Louise (Finney) Campbell. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1966, and took part in the Cuban Missile Blockade.
On June 4, 1987, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Wood) Ravera, and they enjoyed over 38 years of marriage, laughs, and adventure. Steve served 27 years as a Detective for the California State Police Bureau of Investigations, with special assignments including Dignitary Protection, and working on many high profile investigations, retiring in 1999. Never one to sit on his laurels, Steve began another 25 year career with Bennett Transport, delivering RVs and enjoying the open road until his second retirement in March 2025.
One of Steve’s passions was motorcycles, and he attended the Sturgis rally in South Dakota for the last 19 years. He was a competitive bicycle rider, winning medals at the Police and Fire Olympics, and completing many century and double century rides. Steve shared his zest for life with everyone he met, encouraging many friends to join in his adventures.
Steve is survived by his wife Elizabeth; children Douglas (Tonya) Campbell, David (Lovilyn) Campbell, Stephanie Campbell (Kevin), Christina (Todd) Maldonado, and Vincent Ravera; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and brother John Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister Irene Shaw.
Friends and relatives are invited to join a celebration of Steve’s life on Saturday, May 31. Services, to be held at St. Clare Catholic Church in Centreville, will include a rosary recitation at 10 am, followed by mass at 10:30 am and a graveside interment at the Prairie River Cemetery. Lunch will be served in the St Clare Fellowship Hall where we will gather to laugh, cry and share our beautiful memories of Steve.
Arrangements by Eley Funeral Home.
