Ruby Schuster, age 78, of Sturgis, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 25, 2025, at her home.
She was born on March 27, 1946, in Hueysville, Kentucky, daughter of the late Zeak and Zelia (Bailey) Prater.
Ruby resided in Sturgis for over 30 years. On October 13, 1972, she married Carl Douglas Schuster at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis by the Rev. Herbert Heidenreich.
Ruby retired in 2009 from Sturgis Public Schools following many years of dedicated employment at Wall School as a special education teacher. Prior to joining Sturgis Public Schools, she taught at the Pathfinder Center.
Ruby graduated with honors from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.
She was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Coldwater.
Ruby enjoyed her flower gardens and birds, fishing, hunting, and her cooking skills will be forever missed. She loved watching game shows, especially Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
She is survived by her husband: Douglas; sons: Bill Prater, Ron (Twyla) Prater, Scott (Tracy) Schuster, Chris (Lenore) Schuster all of Sturgis; grandchildren: Morgan, Madison, Mason, Hermynee, Brayden and Zach; great grandchildren: Lindsey and Landon and several brothers, sisters and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers and sisters.
In honoring family wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Ruby Schuster will be held at 2:00, Sunday, March 30th at Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. Pastor Kim Cole of the Church of the Holy Spirit will officiate. A time of continued fellowship will follow the memorial service at the funeral home.
