Statewide tornado drill planned

A statewide tornado drill is set to take place this week as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan.

State and local officials encourage residents to participate in the voluntary drill, set to take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Michigan averages about 15 tornadoes a year, according to state officials. The average lead time for a tornado warning is 10 to 15 minutes, according to state police.
