Evelyn Nuffer, “The Chicken Lady” lived at 726 S. Grant Avenue. She walked around town with one arm tucked inside her coat. When asked if you wanted to see what she had she opened her coat, showing the warm, cozy red hen sitting on her arm.. If chickens could smile this one did. Sometimes she was at the First United Methodist Church Live Nativity with the chickens because “there were chickens at the manger when Christ was born so they should should be included”. Working with the 4-H Rolling Clover Club and children at the St. Joseph County Fair showing them how to care for and train their poultry was her joy. She helped with donating trophies and purchasing show birds at the auction. Evelyn was a licensed Poultry Inspector for the State. The Michigan Poultry Fanciers recognized her work with a plaque. Also, She volunteered caring for the birds at Scidmore Park. Evelyn passed away in 2009. A time of food and fellowship followed the service at the Poultry Barn at the Fairgrounds. Next time: South Douglas(s) Avenue.
