TR murder case to be featured on 20/20

An ABC newsmagazine program will feature a case involving the murder of a Three Rivers woman dating to 1988.

The program, 20/20, will showcase on tonight’s episode how technology played a critical part in solving the cold-case murder of Cathy Swartz. She was 19 when she was murdered at her Riverside Townhouse apartment by Robert Waters in December 1988.

Waters was arrested in April 2023, nearly 35 years later in South Carolina. He died by suicide in his jail cell days later, just before he was to be extradited to St. Joseph County.

Tonight’s (March 7, 2025) episode will focus on Texas-based Othram Labs and its use of forensic technology to solve cold-case murders. The focus on Swartz’s murder will be featured in addition to a segment on a 1995 Texas cold-case murder.

St. Joseph County District Court Judge Jeff Middleton, who was chief assistant prosecuting attorney at the time of Swartz’s murder, is featured prominently in tonight’s program.

It airs at 9 o’clock on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu.
