Michigan Department of Transportation and contractor Anlaan Corp. have begun work to expand the U.S. 131 interchange with U.S. 131 Business Route in Kalamazoo County.
The project includes adding new ramps from northbound U.S. 131 on to U.S. 131 Business Route and from U.S. 131 Business Route to southbound U.S. 131.
Work on the $19 million investment began last week. Each of the new ramps will require a new bridge, a project in itself that is expected to be completed in November.
MDOT’s Nick Schirripa said there will be single-lane closures on U.S. 131 and U.S. 131 Business Route, but both highways will remain open to traffic in both directions for a majority of the project.
Work will require total closures for five weekends and traffic will follow posted detours. Those closures will be announced when the exact dates are known.
