A city police department in Allegan County is contemplating whether to disband and turn law-enforcement services over to the sheriff’s department.
According to WGVU, Public Media, Allegan City Manager Joel Dye said eliminating its nine-member police department would save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, allowing municipal officials to reinvest into the community to tackle infrastructure projects.
Dye said sheriff’s departments provide satisfactory law enforcement in several west Michigan communities.
An exploratory committee is evaluating the pros and cons of contracting with the sheriff’s agency for police services.
