Allegan will keep police department

After a proposal to outsource law enforcement, Allegan municipal officials decided they will keep its police department.

WWMT-TV said after strong community opposition and a review of a possible agreement with the county sheriff’s office, Allegan city officials announced Wednesday they have scrapped a proposal to disband the Allegan Police Department and replace it with county deputies.

City Manager Joel Dye said the city asked for resident input and Allegan officials listened. Contracting with the county for police services is no longer an option, Dye said.

He said the city is operationally sound, but it still needs to raise approximately $11 million over the next decade to repair roads, in addition to costs to replace lead water service lines, maintain parks and other critical infrastructure projects.
