Sturgis aproves purchase of new siren

Sturgis City Commission members recently approved the $30,000 purchase of a new siren as part of the municipality’s emergency network.

The new siren will replace a vintage siren that has been offline for several months. In fact, the antiquated siren, atop the Sturgis Department of Public Safety building, seized up during a tornado warning for St. Joseph County last summer.

Andy Strudwick, deputy director of the Sturgis Department of Public Safety, said a follow-up inspection last summer confirmed the siren could not be repaired.

The $29,200 replacement cost includes equipment, delivery and full installation of the new siren from Allegan County-based West Shore Services.

It will be placed on a free-standing pole across from city hall.
