A Vicksburg baseball legend was remembered over the weekend during a rededication ceremony.
Coach Ed Knapp, a community activist who coached Vicksburg varsity baseball for 35 years, was remembered Saturday. He died in October at the age of 88.
Current head coach Brian Deal oversaw the re-dedication ceremony before the school hosted its inaugural, three-team “Ed Knapp Memorial Baseball Tournament.”
Deal presented a game-worn Knapp baseball jersey and the original “Knapp Field” sign to Knapp’s sons, Tom and Ted. Son, Fred, was unable to attend.
In addition, Deal was the first to publicly acknowledge the jersey retirement of Knapp’s No. 17. The retirement sign is in the right field fence.
Meanwhile, a new “Knapp Field” sign has been mounted outside the diamond.
