Alleged shooter is identified

A man responsible for allegedly shooting three people during a fight last weekend in Constantine has been arraigned.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor Deb Davis said Leonardo Duran Hernandez, a 22-year-old Constantine resident, was arraigned earlier this week in St. Joseph County District Court.

Hernandez was taken into custody following an incident at 11:50 p.m. last Saturday at the Harvey House bar.

Centreville-Constantine Police Chief Dan Thayer said three people were shot and a fourth suffered a broken leg after jumping from a second-story deck in an attempt to flee from the gunshots.

  1. We have a long history of policing in Constantine. We used to have a police department, our own police chief, lieutenant, officer, administrative assistant and matron. And direct contact. Not anymore. Somehow Centreville’s former and lesser police department that contracted for service from Constantine instead has been allowed to merge with the brunt of expenses borne by Constantine taxpayers.

“I would also like to take this time to remind everyone, office hours are not “fixed” in either village, therefore office phones are not always staffed. Our officers are most readily contacted on the police radio, so if you need to speak with a police officer, you must call Central Dispatch. If an emergency, dial 911. The non-emergency number for Central Dispatch is 269-435-4355, however please understand you may not receive a reply for more than a week, depending on that officer’s schedule. So, if you need assistance right away, you must call Central Dispatch to speak with an on-duty officer.”

  2. Yeh our cop could be 10 miles away protecting the village that houses the sheriff’s department. Makes perfect sense.

  3. I’m confused. Call 9 1 1 for an emergency,, but call central dispatch at the usual police number? Isn’t central dispatch another name for the 9 1 1 facility? Why would it take more than a week for a reply? Central dispatch or the police don’t check messages daily?
