County educators honored during recognition program

Dozens of St. Joseph County educators were honored during an annual recognition program Thursday at St. Joseph County Intermediate School District.

Parent Advisory Committee of St. Joseph County Chair Kathleen Brandon said winners and nominees were a part of PAC’s 38th annual awards saluting educators and students who advocate for special education throughout St. Joseph County’s nine public school districts.

Winners were: Ancillary Staff of the Year Jennifer Kolis of the ISD; Community/Agency Member of the Year Tara Renda of Michigan Rehabilitation Services; General Education Teacher of the Year Bart Schrader of Centreville Elementary; Special Recognition of the Year Meredith Spicer of Centreville Public Schools; Special Education Student of the Year elementary Dezi Lacy of Three Rivers Community Schools, secondary Carson Conley of Sturgis High and young adult Jory Stidham of Pathfinder Center; Special Education Teacher of the Year Julianne Kent of Sturgis Public Schools; Peer-to-Peer K-5 Bradey Fenech of Centreville Elementary and 6-12 Adalynn Stanton of Nottawa Community School; Support Staff of the Year Kelly Guiter of Three Rivers Community Schools; and Volunteer of the Year the Frederick family of Centreville.

Brandon said about 1,200 of St. Joseph County’s 10,000 public-school students receive some level of special-education services.
