Dale E. Crist, age 93, formerly of Elkhart, passed away on May 9, 2025 at Allisonville Meadows Assisted Living in Fishers, IN.
Dale was born in Elkhart on August 25, 1931, to the late John U. Crist and J. Ruth (Huffman) Crist. He lived for many years in Elkhart, and spent over three decades in White Pigeon.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: David H. Crist, Mary-Irene Crist, M. Jean Crist, and Carl Crist.
Dale is survived by his daughter, Julie Oberlin (Gary Oberlin) of Sanibel, FL, and his son, Tim Crist (Wendy Hall) of Tucson, AZ. He was a devoted grandfather to Dr. Andrew Oberlin (Dr. Kate Oberlin) and their children Jack, Mia, and Ava; Allie Oberlin; Marlie Crist; and Jackson Crist (Emily) and their daughter, Sophia.
Dale honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War as an Aviation Mechanic stationed in Guam. He was a skilled tool and die maker and retired as Vice President and General Manager of Gray Brothers Stamping in White Pigeon. He was a dedicated member of the Elkhart Lions Club for 42 years and a longtime enthusiast in local antique car and engine clubs, restoring tractors, a 1938 Buick and a 1950’s Willy’s Jeepster.
Dale will be remembered for his sense of humor and community spirit. He volunteered countless hours restoring and driving the antique fire truck in White Pigeon parades and built the sign structures for White Pigeon High School and its football fields.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2025, at Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart. Honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the Elkhart Honor Guard. Pastor Jeremy Sarber will officiate.
Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart is assisting the family, who invite all to a luncheon at Our Place on Main, 126 S. Main Street in Elkhart immediately following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Riley Children’s Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
