Food service company plans layoffs at Ascension Borgess facilities

A food-service company in the process of acquiring Ascension Michigan’s southwest region is laying off almost 250 employees.

According to WOOD-TV, contracts that Compass Group USA has with Ascension Borgess at four hospitals and a health/fitness center are poised to expire prematurely, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications it filed earlier this month.

A total of 244 employees will be laid off July 1, the notice says. Those employees include dietitians, cooks, dishwashers and housekeepers. Nearly 80 percent of those affected work at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Indiana-based Beacon Health System announced in April its acquisition of four hospitals and dozens of clinics.

  1. Remember when Borgess was a nationally recognized, top-tier hospital that lived up to its accolades?

There’s not one within an hour of us that does more than market their substandard care as exceptional. Marketing and profiteering runs this nation.
