Burr Oak chooses new superintendent

St. Joseph County’s smallest school district has apparently secured its new superintendent.

Burr Oak Community Schools Board of Education members agreed Monday to offer a contract to Kelvin Butts. Butts has most recently served as superintendent of Benton Harbor Area Schools in Berrien County.

Butts was one of two finalists for the post, which was vacated by the recent resignation of Kristina Owens. He was chosen over Howard Edwards, director of School Learning for South Bend Community Schools.

The two were interviewed for about an hour each during Monday’s meeting.

Salary and terms of Butts’ contract will be worked out prior to his first day on the job, July 1.
