Elmer David Young, age 93, of Burr Oak, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at the Laurels of Coldwater.
He was born May 30, 1932 in Barrington, Illinois, a son to the late David and Ruth (Armbruster) Young.
Elmer was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict.
On March 26, 1955, at the Congregational Church in Bronson, MI, he married Betty Jean Nutt. They celebrated 70 years of marriage this year and have resided in the same home for the last 65 years.
Elmer was an over-the-road truck driver hauling steel for various companies. After retiring from truck driving, he still enjoyed transporting Amish work crews around the county, and just stopped driving a couple years ago. His family meant everything to him. He so enjoyed taking his daughters to horse shows as they were growing up and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years: Betty; his 5 daughters: Beth (Randy) Smoker of Colon, Shirley (Lloyd) Mallow of Bronson, Brenda Lackey of Dillon, Montana, Darlyn (Butch) Holbrook of Bronson, and Susie (Marty) Eldred of Marcellus; 5 grandchildren: Kendall (Casie) Smith, Jessica (Matt) Cossiart, Keri Carson, Chelsea (Gary) Riley, and Sarah (Kaleb) Holbrook; 6 great-grandchildren: Donovan Cossiart, Harley Cossiart, Finn Carson, Felix Carson, Gavin Laurie, and Ember Riley; and his beloved dog: Joey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Alice Ethridge and Lois Yoder, son-in-law: Tom Lackey, grandson: Adam Lackey, and grandson-in-law: Nick Carson.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 to 3:30 PM, Friday, June 13, 2025 at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091. Services celebrating the life of Elmer D. Young will be held at 3:30, Friday, immediately following the visitation, at the funeral home with Pastor Tony Ferguson, officiating. Interment and graveside services will follow in Burr Oak Cemetery with full military honors by the Capt. John J. Kelley V.F.W. Post #1355 and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Memorial donations in his memory may be directed to the St. Joseph County Animal Control, 652 E. Main St., Centreville, MI 49032. Envelopes are available at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis who has been entrusted with the arrangements.
