Schoolcraft considers crosswalk on Grand St.

Schoolcraft municipal officials are reviewing a Michigan Department of Transportation proposal calling for a crosswalk between two points on opposite sides of U.S. 131.

During their May meeting, village council members were addressed by MDOT’s Brian Barnes. Barnes said the proposed crosswalk would connect Bud’s bar at the east side of the route to Kalamazoo County State Bank to the west.

The proposed crosswalk would include a pedestrian island in the center of the roadway, providing a safe place to pause before traffic clears to continue crossing what is known within village limits as Grand Street.

Barnes said the biggest takeaway from the plan is a traffic-calming measure that is expected to slow traffic.

Village officials said they like the idea of any concept that will cause traffic to reduce speed. They asked Barnes to submit a written proposal before the matter is given further consideration.
