Centreville Public Schools Superintendent Chad Brady is exploring the idea of a student-run food store within the high school.
During last month’s board of education meeting, Brady introduced Michigan Farm Bureau Community Engagement Specialist Audrey Carey. She provided details about a so-called Food Club initiative, which would create a quasi grocery store for all district students and their family members.
The concept includes fresh food, which would especially benefit struggling families whose diets often consist of cheaper, processed foods.
Carey explained students earn points awarded monthly based on their family’s size. Healthier items would cost less, while less-nutritious products would be assigned a greater number of points.
Carey said she would like to pattern Centreville’s potential Food Club after a similar, highly successful club in Ludington.
Brady said Centreville is an ideal place to have such an operation, as 53 percent of its students qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch.
