County commission approves environmental study at 2 facilities

St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners has approved an environmental study to be performed at two county-owned facilities in Centreville.

During Tuesday’s St. Joseph County Commission meeting, county administrator Teresa Cupp explained that air-quality testing conducted at Covered Bridge Healthcare and a section of the strip mall on Industrial Parkway – adjacent to St. Joseph County Animal Control –confirmed the presence of a chemical called Tetrachloroethylene, also known by the acronym of PCE.

It is a toxic chemical used primarily as a dry-cleaning agent. Due to the proximity of animal control and the jail property, Cupp says it would be prudent to test at the county-owned sites.

The work is expected to be done within the next two weeks.
