Police search for person of interest in Dowagiac murder investigation

Cass County authorities are on the lookout for a person of interest in a murder investigation.

Dowagiac Police Chief Steven Grinnewald said officers were called shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday to the area of Clay Street and Halstead Street following a call to central dispatch reporting shots fired.

Officers determined a verbal altercation allegedly occurred at some point between two subjects at a party.

During the altercation, a gun was produced and several shots fired. Some of the bullets struck the victim, a 19-year-old man from Benton Harbor.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. His name has not yet been released.

Police have identified a person of interest in the shooting, 24-year-old Demorrio Lowes of Cassopolis. Anyone with knowledge of Lowe’s location is asked to contact the Dowagiac Police Department.
