Harding’s plans to buy Village Market chain

A familiar name in the world of grocery stores is in the process of purchasing the Village Market chain of supermarkets.

Harding’s Friendly Markets has reached a tentative agreement to purchase the four remaining Village Market grocery stores. Village Market has markets in Colon, Allegan, Gobles and Decatur.

The Village Market chain is owned by South Haven-based Murk Management. Hardings, meanwhile, is a 28-store chain of supermarket based in Plainwell, and includes stores in Three Rivers and Schoolcraft.

The transition from Village Market is expected to take place before the end of the year.
