HVAC unit to blame for smoke, evacuation of elementary school

Sturgis Department of Public Safety personnel responded this week to a report of smoke inside Wenzel Elementary School.

According to a department media release, fire and police units were dispatched at 3:20 p.m. Monday to the 400 block of Park Street.

Responding crews reported light smoke in the building’s hallways and moderate smoke inside a classroom.

The building was evacuated, and all students and staff were accounted for.

Investigators said it appears smoke originated from an HVAC unit inside a classroom. Authorities took the unit out of service. No damage to the building occurred, emergency personnel said.
