Out and About – Week of October 6th

If you don’t learn something new each day, your day is not complete. Here are eleven things people learn too late in life:

–The less you say, the more your words will matter.
— Don’t take everything personally. Not everyone thinks about you as much as you do.
— When you focus on problems, you’ll have more problems. When you focus on possibilities, you’ll have more opportunities.
— No matter how much it hurts now, someday you will look back and realize your struggle changed your life for the better.
— You meet people for a reason. Either you meet them to change your life or you’re the one who will change theirs.
— Never be afraid to try something new. Life gets boring when you stay within the limits of what you already know.
— You will never truly know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.
— Once you begin to take note of the things you are grateful for, you begin to lose sight of the things that you lack.
— If you don’t have control over your mouth, you don’t have control over your future.
— Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.
— The only person you have to face in the morning is yourself.

I hate when people mix up “Your” and “You’re”. There so stupid.

We recently replaced our refrigerator. When I first opened one of the doors, I noticed there was a thermometer on the inside wall. I didn’t realize how important the inside temperature was until I read a Consumer Report on the subject. Evidently, some types of disease-causing bacteria can multiply rapidly in the refrigerator if the inside temperature isn’t cold enough. We should check the temperature regularly. It should be below 40 degrees and the freezer should be no higher than zero for optimal food safety.

During the COVID crisis, we were all reminded to wash our hands regularly. Even now, we all should remember to wash our hands more frequently when we are ill. According to a USDA study, we should first wet our hands with soap, then rub vigorously for at least 20 seconds before rinsing with warm running water. Not rubbing hands was the biggest hand-washing mistake people make. It has also been said that when preparing food, you should wash your hands before you start, and wash them again anytime you switch tasks in the kitchen.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved the act of “Hugging”. However, receiving a hug is not a pleasant experience to some. Evidently, the physical touch of others can cause undue stress. Temple Grandin, a professor of animal science at Colorado State University and an autism advocate, developed a squeeze device or hug machine. The machine simulates the pressure of a hug without any physical touching. Temple was diagnosed with autism, so she found that this machine could soothe people with autism. To use the machine, a person likes down between two padded side boards on the machine and the boards apply gentle pressure similar to a hug. This device is employed in schools and other settings to help those with autism.
