Sturgis to continue curbside recycling

Sturgis City Commission members last week opted to continue curbside recycling services for residents, albeit at a higher cost.

The city began looking at options about a year ago, as its contract with Borden Waste-Away is set to expire Dec. 31. Residents are currently charged about $2 per month through taxes for curbside recycling.

The city has absorbed rising costs, but is facing a budget shortfall of about $150,000. To compensate, the city explored the option of adding the service as a utility. As a result, the monthly cost would rise to $6 per month, with a 3% increase each year. A one-year contract would see the cost set at $8 per month.
