James Allan Clark, age 90, of Portage, passed away at his home on Thursday, December 4, 2025 after a long illness. He was born in Cleveland on May 23, 1935 with his loving parents Kenneth and Lucile (Smith) Clark. James attended St. Joseph High School and was part of the 1953 graduating class. Following high school, James joined the United States Army and proudly served his country. In 1956, he married Valerie Geisler and had 31 wonderful years together before her passing in 1987. In 1991, James married Tedi Theodore, and the two of them enjoyed 31 years together before her passing in 2022.
James loved the outdoors; whether it was hunting, fishing, or camping, he enjoyed nature. He took many trips to the Florida Keys, Lake Michigan, and Colorado with his family and friends. His yard was often envied, always taken care of, with a garden full of tomatoes ready for picking. In his early years, he was a teacher/coach at St. Joseph High School, shaping young minds and wrestlers/football players. James was heavily involved with the St. Joseph County school system. He was the principle at Mendon High School, County Superintendent of Schools, and played a vital part in building the Pathfinder Educational Center in Centreville. He wanted to give back to his community and made sure the children received the best opportunities possible; even passing nation-wide handicapped laws that benefited those in need. He loved his community. He loved helping children. He loved giving back. Most importantly, James loved his family and will be missed greatly.
James is survived by his two sons; Rusty (Tina) Clark and Rick (Lauren) Clark; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way; and his brother, Kenny (Carolyn) Clark. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Kenneth and Lucile Clark; his sister, Carol Gunkel; his first wife, Valerie; and second wife, Tedi.
Visitation for James will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 from 10am until 1pm at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Services will begin at 1pm with Pastor Clint Zehr officiating. Following the service, burial will take place at South Portage Cemetery. It is suggested that donations in memory of James, be made to the Pathfinder Educational Center.
