Phillip “Phil” Summerville, age 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Three Rivers on Saturday, December 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Phil was born on December 28, 1956 in Kalamazoo, the son of Darlene (Summerville) Lard. William M. Lard lovingly served as his father figure and played an important role in shaping the man Phil became. Phil spent more than 40 years of his life in Flowerfield Township, a place he proudly called home.
On May 25, 1985, Phil married the love of his life, Pat Hulsey, in Three Rivers. Together they built a life centered on family, love, and simple joys.
Phil was a hardworking and dedicated employee throughout his life. He worked at Portage Steel for over 25 years, followed by 10 years at Camoplast in Three Rivers. After retiring from full-time work, he continued to stay active by working as a greeter at Walmart, where he enjoyed meeting people and sharing his friendly smile.
A true homebody, Phil enjoyed spending time with Pat, especially taking her fishing. He loved animals—especially dogs—and had a natural way with them. He was very skilled with computers and enjoyed watching Detroit Lions football and soccer. Phil was also known for his homemade bread and his famous peanut butter cookies, which were a favorite among family.
Above all else, Phil loved his family. His greatest joy came from time spent with those he cared about most.
He is survived by his loving wife, Pat Summerville of Three Rivers; his children, Rhonda (Anthony) Miller of Three Rivers, and David (Heather) VanDyk of Paw Paw; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his father figure, William M. Lard of Three Rivers; his siblings, Robin (Larry) Allen of Marcellus, and Kelli (Roberto) Salinas of Three Rivers; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Darlene Lard, and his grandmother, Ester Summerville.
In accordance with Phil’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 28, 2026, at 3:00 at the Joco Center, 10th Avenue, Three Rivers, Michigan 49093.
