St. Joseph County Prosecutor Deb Davis provided more information this week related to the case of a Vicksburg man who faces up to life in prison after pleading guilty to operating while intoxicated causing death.
Davis issued a media release Wednesday detailing the case of 30-year-old Logan Thomas.
Thomas entered a plea in the fatal crash that killed 10-year-old Anthony Miller in December 2024 on Banker Road in Sherman Township.
Davis pointed out that according to an investigation, Miller and other children in his group were traveling on the far edge of the paved roadway and had adequate safety and visibility equipment; Thomas did not apply brakes prior to impact and took no evasive action to avoid the children; roadway, lighting, and weather conditions were clear; and Thomas had more than 1,300 feet of unobstructed visibility of the children as he approached from behind.
As part of the plea, the prosecution and defense have recommended a minimum sentence of seven-and-a-half years in the Michigan Department of Corrections. Judge Paul Stutesman will determine at sentencing Dec. 19 whether he will accept that recommendation.
Thomas entered a plea of guilty to operating while intoxicated causing death – enhanced as a four-time habitual offender.
Toxicology revealed Thomas was under the influence of methamphetamine, fentanyl, amphetamine and morphine at the time of the collision. Thomas was also on bond for driving while license suspended in Kalamazoo County, Davis said.
