St. Joseph CTA to provide free NYE rides home

A public service started 17 years ago by St. Joseph County Transportation Authority returns again this week.

As its name implies, “New Year’s Eve Free Ride Home,” is a no-questions-asked service providing New Year’s Eve revelers a ride home. Pick-ups and drop-offs must be within St. Joseph County.

Agency director Marci Goodman said the service starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday and runs through 2 a.m. Thursday. She reiterated the pick-up and drop-off requirements, and said a passenger will not be given a ride to a party or business, only to a residence where they plan to spend the night.

Goodman said the service costs about $800 to provide, though she wished to acknowledge a few local businesses that have contributed about two-thirds of the expense: Nottawa Gas, the In-Between, Frankie’s, Frank Perez Insurance, and first-time sponsor Southern Michigan Bank and Trust.

One vehicle will be positioned in Three Rivers and ready to pick up anyone in and around Three Rivers, including Constantine, Centreville and Mendon. Its number is 269-330-8267.

A Sturgis-based bus will pick up anyone in and around Sturgis, including Colon, Burr Oak and White Pigeon. Its number is 269-330-6664.

A total of 18 people took advantage of Free Ride Home a year ago.
