Sturgis approves recycling agreement

Sturgis municipal officials recently OK’d a franchise agreement with a company to provide recycling services.

During last week’s city commission meeting, a three-year pact was reached with Borden Waste-Away.

According to terms of the contract, cost for the service is $6 per unit per month for the first year. Adjustment by 3.5 percent or the Consumer Price index – whichever of the two is greater – will be implemented in the second and third years.

Borden earlier this year was the only company to provide a bid for such services. Its recycling history with the city dates to 2008.

According to the contract, recycling pick up will take place every other week. The previous schedule saw pick up twice per month.

The city plans to publicize a 2026 pick up schedule. Pick up will alternate between the north side of the city one week and its south side the following week.
