Trial schedule for co-founder of coffee shop

The co-founder of a Sturgis-based coffee shop is scheduled to stand trial for alleged criminal sexual conduct of a minor.

Authorities said Jared Smith, 49, is charged with two counts of first-degree and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person younger than 13.

Smith is the former CEO of Five Lakes Coffee, which originated in Sturgis in 2002 and has grown to 10 locations.

He started Five Lakes with his brother, Paul, who issued a statement on the company’s website. First, he stated Jared was no longer with the company. Then, he noted the investigation was brought to his attention in November 2024.

Jared Smith is out on a personal-recognizance bond. His trial is slated to start Feb. 10 in Calhoun County.
