Woman enters plea in Mendon CSC case

A former contract worker for Mendon Community Schools entered a no-contest plea Monday related to a case involving two Mendon High School students.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor Deb Davis said 34-year-old Kaitlyn Sand, formerly of Three Rivers but most recently a Sturgis resident, entered the plea to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The proceeding took place as part of a status conference in St. Joseph County Circuit Court.

Authorities said Sand allegedly engaged in sexual activity with students she met as a food-service employee through a company contracted with the district.

In exchange for her no-contest plea, four other sexual assault charges and one for tampering with evidence were dropped, court officials said.

Davis said Sand faces imprisonment of up to 15 years per count when she is sentenced Jan. 23.
