County commission sets meeting times

St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners agreed to change the start time of their monthly meeting.

During a special meeting Tuesday, commissioners handled their usual first-of-the-year business, which includes establishing start time and dates for their monthly executive committee meeting – essentially a committee of the whole – and their once-a-month board meeting.

Commissioners agreed to continue holding executive committee meetings at 4 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month.

Meanwhile, board of commissioners meetings will still meet the third Tuesday of the month, but at 6 p.m., one hour later than its current call to order.

Commissioners voted 6-1 in favor of the change. Proponents said the later start time is more conducive to residents who work day jobs.

A 6 p.m. start time for county commission meetings was enacted in January 2017. Start time reverted to 5 o’clock later in the year, however, after county officials concluded the one-hour change to 6 p.m. drew no more audience members than it did to their 5 o’clock assemblies.
