The minimum-wage rate in Michigan increased by more than $1 an hour with the start of the new year.
According to state officials, the standard minimum wage rose from $12.48 per hour to $13.73 an hour. The adjustment is a move to increase Michigan’s standard minimum wage to $15 an hour by next year.
Any non-exempt employees must still be paid time-and-a-half their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a week.
Meanwhile, minimum wage for employees who are 16 or 17 years of age is now $11.67 an hour.
Any future increases in the standard minimum wage will be tied to the inflation rate starting in 2028 and beyond.
Michigan is one of about two dozen states that sets its minimum wage beyond the federal rate of $7.25 an hour. That amount has been unchanged since 2009.
